Additional Comments: Further integration of renewable generation into the electricity grid as well as deeper market integration require investment in electricity transmission infrastructure at levels unseen from the early days of the electricity industry. Current pace of investment is insufficient both at the extensive and intensive margins. Solid empirical evidence and analysis of causes behind this phenomenon is almost non-existent. Understanding the regulatory and market mechanisms influencing transmission investment is crucial for designing incentives that will lead to development of the grid. I want to shine light on the incentives to (not) invest in transmission infrastructure using comprehensive and, in economics, novel data covering nearly all of Europe.
